I’m catching up on Substack today, and loved this essay! I know zero about philosophy despite my two-course requirement in college (my university was a Jesuit school so it required philosophy and theology). Really enjoying your exploration of these topics!

Yes, you sure need a cocktail to travel the rabbit hole of consciousness!! Isn't Nishida the one whose stone is on Philosopher's Walk in Kyoto? I loved that walk.

Sally, I have no idea if he has a stone but he’s such a famous and great philosopher so it makes sense. It’s embarrassing I have spent so little time in Kyoto I think in 20 years I only visited three times and I went on the philosophers walk but it was in my earliest year and I bet you I didn’t even look down!

I found a lovely ceramicist along Philosopher's Walk. Got a little vase glazed with my very favorite color of ochre. It is the first thing I see when I come in my house, and it makes me very happy! Consciousness of deep joy! I think there is a Bible quote (Isaiah?) to the effect that that "Potters understand".

I remember a ceramicist in Philly who shared that in a class I was taking. Isn't it a remarkable quote?
