I discovered your substack via The Millions where I read this article first. Brilliant! I thought Salesses book was brilliant and only confirmed much of what I'd seen, read, and heard in way too many workshops. The irony, of course, is I'm an American-born white woman who, essentially, only speaks English fluently, but reads widely from Asian to Indian to European books and has, for years, lamented the "hero's journey" and other blueprints slavishly followed by both novelists and screenwriters. It is so refreshing to read your take! Wishing you all good fortune and happiness writing YOUR way.
Yikes. It's a bit premature as I haven't created copy yet. The library has most of my tea books, if you're interested.
Maybe tea or writing will connect us someday after COVID abates. I'm in East Hollywood. Until then, arrigato for your newsletter; loving the archived stories.
