This is a timely piece, Leanne!

I was marveling on my walk today in seeing a few roses still in bloom. Despite the frosty nights! And most of the leaves have fallen, a few clusters hanging on.

I've never learned anything about flower arranging. I just have always had a small vase of cut flowers. And Goethe? "Flowers are the tears of God's laughter".

I had never heard that before, the flowers are the tears of god’s laughter. How beautiful! In Pasadena are a sycamore tree is turning golden I cannot believe it’s almost Thanksgiving!

Thank you for this! I just found out less than a week ago that my mother took flower arranging lessons as a girl. She casually dropped this information (complete with what “school” it was, though I’ve now forgotten) on me in the middle of something mundane. And then you mentioned Natasja Sadi and her posture toward the harm done toward her ancestors in centuries past. It kind of blew my mind, because I’ve struggled to reckon with the harm that Japan has done the world, and I’ve also struggled to reckon with the trauma that my mother endured because of her own country. Sadi’s quote about telling the same story from different perspectives is amazing and her work is amazing.

Thank you, Maya!! Even though I am not able to arrange flowers Dutch still-life style, I truly loved her book so much--and I was really moved by her as a person. Guess what? I made curry for scratch--first time ever! I am going to write a post about it :)

🤯 I’ve never done that, EVER! I want to taste! Wish you lived a little closer than 5 hours by plane!

I wish we lived closer and could be best friends... I was so afraid to try it since it sounded hard but in fact--it was easy-ish and also so yummy!! Will post in a bit.

I love the empty spaces, Leanne. I much prefer your arrangements to the lush Dutch ones, although I can certainly appreciate the beauty of the individual flowers. My mother was very involved in flower arranging in her old age, and it was the shape of the arrangement that was always arresting--which branch or stalk balanced against another or how a form might suggest movement. She also prefered the empty spaces.

I didn’t realize your mother was involved in flower arranging. It’s true the older I get the more the simple act of being around Flowers can completely change my mood. I absolutely love the lash Dutch ones it’s just so expensive I don’t think I’ve ever managed to get close, and it could be just that I keep running out of money! Flowers are pretty expensive if you buy them from the supermarket like I do. it would be great to live near a flower market!
