I will definitely do so! My next newsletter (to be sent on March 10th) will be all about Goto trip. I am this time also planning to open a new section on Substack #tripdiaries and post daily updates/photos from the trip each evening but will only post those on Substack and not push through email.

Definitely an interesting period of Japanese history! I found the Scorsese film good but too long-winded. Feels like Ferreira is likened to Judas, yes, although it's been a long while since I saw it.

"Some scholars think that chanoyu was in part informed by the Catholic Mass (the method of purifying and handling the cup for example)" - I've never heard that but how interesting! Do you have any sources you could share?

It really was such an interesting period of time. Most of the high-ranking Europeans, who lived or resided in Japan, had special rooms for drinking tea, and they is a lot of circumstantial evidence that the Catholic mass influenced the tea ceremony… you can find references to this uncanny similarity in both Japanese and in English. The references everywhere. You just won’t learn very much because I don’t think there’s anyway to know, because nothing was really ever written down as far as I know, so people just remark about the startling similarities, especially in handling the chawan when it’s purified with the cloth… Once you hear this, you won’t be able to unsee this when you watch in Mass. It is uncanny…

I haven‘t been to mass for a long time but now that you mention it... yes! How weird & interesting! Gonna keep thinking about it now.

The galleon ship! Oh, my goodness! If I saw that coming on the horizon as if from nowhere, I would be speaking in tongues! As usual, Leanne, I enjoyed your whole piece here! (And need cake now.)

lol!!!! Did you watch the show? So far, I say skip it! ❤️

I did see the show! Action with a lot of blood. Nothing of spiritual dilemma is nuanced. Scorcese is the one who made the period about Judas.

Thanks so much for this! I haven't read Silence, I need to go pick up a copy. I really loved that movie, I had expected it to be terrible because very often films set in Japan by non-Japanese are terrible, and it was very good. Good reminder to go back to the source!
