Compelling and lively description of the star status of the Chigusa! Such a different world. I once read a quote (don't recall where from - may even have been from Isaiah) that "the potter understands". That definition, distinguishing ceramics from all other arts, really impresses me and seems to fill your own revelation with the experience of the Chigusa. And then on to Virginia; so different from So Cal. Hopefully you see many fireflies, their dances inspiring the images of your poems with the appreciation that you live so effortlessly.
I love that quote! Also from the Bible that human beings were created out of clay I imagine Clay found near the river! It is so different here the air is so thick with humidity compared to dry California. It’s a real shock! But it makes the place so beautiful.
Beautiful, both the chigusa & the residency! Reminds me of tea ceremony seminars in remote monasteries, our rooms were similarly spartan, although of course we hardly spent any (waking) time in them.
oh that is incredible that you got to do seminars for tea ceremony. I can’t even imagine! That would be my dream! My flower teacher talks about things like this a lot that she does in Japan. And there’s something wonderful about just pairing down in this simple room! One of the painters was saying that she thinks we’re so productive here because we don’t have to think about meals and she was talking about how much energy goes into shopping planning and just cooking and cleaning up the three meals a day that she eats and I also think that’s true that having one big burden taken off your shoulders leaves a lot of free time
I don't know how it is in Japan but I was lucky to be part of a small but vibrant community of tea people in Europe that held seminars regularly. I got to visit two of them before I moved to Japan! Maybe I'll be back for another one sometime...
I think that's definitely true about meal planning, shopping, & daily chores in general. Even if it doesn't take much time in the grand scheme of things, it still occupies a part of your mind that takes away from the creative work. A short-term writing residency or retreat would be a dream come true for me as well!
Wonderful post on chigusa. Sad that it's now kept for show when the best way to appreciate is to put it to good use! Have a fruitful and wonderful residency in Vermont, Leanne!

I think it wants to be returned to Japan, where it was like a movie star filled with tea leaves! ❤️❤️❤️
Beautifully descriptive. Great way to start the day! I fell in love with the urn too while reading this post.
