In Arkady Martine’s 2019 debut novel A Memory called Empire, newly-appointed Ambassador Mahit Dzmare travels via jumpgate from her home planet at the edge of the Teixcalaani empire to the capital.
A Memory Called Empire was so fascinating & heart-wrenching for me because Mahit's love-hate relationship with Teixcalaan is exactly my relationship with Japan & Japanese. Looking forward to reading the entire essay!
You should read it! It's much more Arrival-esque than the first (the premise is basically the same) but even better. It'll give you more to think about!
Nowadays, you show your cultural capital by memeing the latest memes.
And it remains a mystery who makes these memes!! ($$$$$)
Cultured capitals. Now wouldn't that be nice?
Wouldn’t it? ❤️❤️❤️

I loved the novels so much!!!! I haven’t started her second novel yet, so I’m really late. I just couldn’t stop thinking of the first one!
