Hi Leanne, This post deeply resonated with me on numerous levels, and deeply. It was also very well written and kept me engaged till the end and hungering for more.
I was with Wim Wenders the last day of filming and had a long discussion on the importance of letting go of worldly affairs in the homeward phase of life. Perhaps that sadness portrayed the existential melancholy of the soul, which we know classical Japanese art likes to linger on. Hirayama was a modern day hermit who found his own mountain.
Thank you so much, Everett! I really appreciate your comment (and your work!) My dream would be to meet WW! What an experience. And yes, a hermit who found his mountain!
I got that from a book about Ibn Arabi and to be alone with the alone is what we all must be--it is a spiritual fact, I guess, so I meant that in a positive sense (not about the negative side of isolation or lonliness....xo
So thought-provoking... I love that little equation, happiness = reality - expectations. I was on the fence about Perfect Days but now I'll watch it after all. Looking forward to finding my way back to little everyday pleasures. Thank you for the reminder, Leanne!

Thank you Leanne, I’m going to more active on Substack now and looking forward to following your work more intently. Love your perspective on life!
Yes! Excellent advice. Expectations are so perilous.
For me, it is really perilous in terms of my writing... as soon as I start holding expectations, the play and joy leaves the writing.
I should watch this, Wings of Desire is one of my favourites.
Mine too ❤️
“Alone with the alone”. This is all too familiar.

The spiritual sense is how I received it, although it evolved from the condition of loneliness. Which I think is frequently the origin.
Hi Leanne, Loved your post: you're my most trusted source for book (and film) recommendations :) Cheers, Daniel
I am so happy to hear from you!!!!
